The man accused of assaulting the husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told police he wanted to take her hostage and “break her kneecap,” court documents show.
The U.S. Department of Justice has charged 42-year-old David DePape with assault and attempted kidnapping. The two charges carry a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison, the department said.
According to court documents, DePape told police he would detain Mrs. Pelosi and speak to her.
If she told him the “truth” he would let her go, if she “lies” he would “break her kneecap”.

He confronted Pelosi as she slept in the couple’s bedroom, according to a federal affidavit filed in court on Monday.
It said DePape said he believed Mrs. Pelosi was the “leader” of the lies the Democrats said.
He is also said to have explained that by breaking her kneecap, she would have to be pushed into Congress, which would show other MPs that there would be consequences for their actions.
Police said officers were called to the house early Friday for a “health check” and found both men with hammers.
The suspect then pulled the hammer away from Mr Pelosi and used it to “violently attack” him before being tackled by police, they said.
‘where is nancy
At some point, the suspect searched the Democratic leader, shouting, “Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy?”
Mr. Pelosi underwent surgery for a fractured skull and injuries to his hand and right arm, his wife’s office said. Doctors expect a full recovery.
Police found zippers in Mr Pelosi’s bedroom, along with a roll of tape, white rope, a hammer, a pair of rubber and cloth gloves, and a journal in DePape’s backpack, the Justice Department said.
Mrs. Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and second in line to the president, was in Washington, D.C., and had recently returned from a security summit in Europe.
The announcement of the federal charges comes as the San Francisco District Attorney will announce state criminal charges against DePape.
He was arrested on Friday on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse and burglary. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday on state charges.
