This weekend’s Premier League games will be postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
A statement read: “In a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In honour of her extraordinary life and service to the country, and as a sign of respect, this weekend’s Premier League will be was postponed, including Monday night’s game.
“Further updates on the Premier League fixtures during the mourning period will be provided in due course.”
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty The Queen’s long and unwavering service to our country. As our longest-reigning monarch, she has been a Inspiring people and leaving an incredible legacy after a lifetime of dedication.
“This is a very sad time not only for the country, but for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join all of us in mourning her passing.”
The EFL also postponed their games. “In further discussions on Friday morning, it has been determined that all EFL matches on September 9-10 will be postponed as a sign of national sport’s respect for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s passing,” they said.
The National League postponed their games shortly after the Premier League and EFL. All matches in Scotland have also been postponed.
It is understood that some clubs have already toured the country ahead of this weekend’s games.
Buckingham Palace announced the Queen’s death on Thursday.
Later that night, the EFL announced that Friday’s match had been postponed.
Burnley and Norwich are set to meet in the Championship, while Tranmere Rovers and Stockport County have a league second game scheduled. These games are no longer held today.
The EFL added in its statement that a decision on whether the weekend games will go ahead has not yet been made.
An EFL statement on Thursday night read: “As a sign of respect, following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II earlier today, the EFL has confirmed its match scheduled for tomorrow night (Friday 9 September) – – Burnley v Norwich City and Tranmere Rovers v Stockport County – have been postponed.
“In addition to further consultation with DCMS and other sports on Friday morning, the remainder of the scheduled schedule for this weekend will be determined following a review of official mourning guidelines.”
The Northern Ireland Football Association has announced that this weekend’s games in the country have been postponed.
